Facts About LASIK Eye Surgery

The term LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileuses. LASIK eye surgery is a medical procedure performed on a patient who has eye problems. These eye problems can be any of the following: being farsighted or nearsighted, and astigmatism. Furthermore, LASIK eye surgery is performed so that a person with any of the aforementioned eye problems would not have to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Nowadays, LASIK eye surgery is one of the most common medical procedures that an eye doctor performs on a patient. Once a patient decides to undergo this kind of surgery, the shape of the cornea will be permanently changed. This is because a rounded ?flap? is created on the cornea. Afterwards, with the use of laser or an instrument called the ?microkeratome?, there is a part of the eye which will be vaporized to correct the eye problem.

LASIK eye surgery has become quite popular in the medical circle because of its painless-free operation. One more advantage that it has over other medical procedures to correct an imperfect vision is: the results are instantaneous. Right after the operation, you just need to let a day or two pass and you will see a definite improvement with your vision.

However, there are some disadvantages to this type of medical procedure. First, the rates can be quite steep so you better check with your eye doctor or ophthalmologist if you plan to undergo such a surgery. Second, just like any other medical operation, there are complications that the patient may suffer in the aftermath of the operation. Third, some job types will not allow an employee to undergo any form of eye surgery.

If you decide to go for LASIK eye surgery, you need to do your part and research so that you will know everything about the procedure. Also, have a thorough talk with your doctor so that you would know what to do before the operation. Finally, you can ask about the results and improvements with your vision problem right after your LASIK eye surgery.

- If you are nearsighted with presbyopia you would have the dominant eye corrected for distance vision.
- If you are farsighted with presbyopia you would not need one eye corrected for distance vision but would have the non-dominant eye corrected for near vision.

The Top Solution To Cure Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an eye defect wherein there is a malformed curvature of the eye lens. Ordinarily, the means to correct astigmatism is to have glasses. In our family with 7 members, a couple of us are ill with astigmatism, my brother and I. My brother’s astigmatism was discovered before mine. And since he already ailing with altered eyesight, purporting his vision is not 20/20 anymore- it just made the situation worse. And since Laser Vision Corection was not that commonly offered and well-known, our parents brought him to an Ophthalmologist and then directed to wear curative glasses. He had to wear glasses continually except when he was washing his face or sleeping. A year or two had gone by and yet his vision did not get better and he still suffered astigmatism. And since the disorder is not astigmatism only, his eye grade adjusted over time and he had to switch his eyeglasses. Unfortunately, the maintenance is quite expensive and is continual.

As for me, I have a 20/20 and 20/25 eyesight and is positive for astigmatism too. Like my brother, I had to wear remedial eyeglasses too and since I was so not in the habit of wearing something for my eye, I often don’t wear it and more often lose it. It was very difficult and irritating, I thought.

It was in the late months of 2008 that Lasik laser eye surgery was suggested by a family friend. He said it was only a minor surgical treatment and that the recovery from it was fast and that he was able to see its consequence and the covalescence it has done to his sister. We were first cynical and thought it was very invasive but then my brother was very fervent to try it. He was 22 when he went through the operation.

It was his left eye that underwent surgery at first. My brother said there was no hurting in any way. He only experienced some sort of heaviness to his eye and not surprisingly the dryness; but there is no considerable pain, per se. The whole process took only 14 minutes and even after that, my brother did not complain of any hurting or halos or blurring of eyesight at all. He was ordered to take in antibiotics and eye drops to help maintain the wetness of the healing eye. My brother was directed to wear an eye shield particulary at night, avoid gobbling seafood for at least two weeks and avoid things that might injure the operated eye. Only a few days after the surgery, my brother’s eyesight got better and he doesn’t need to wear his eyeglasses anymore. A week after, his left eye eyesight were 20/15- almost standard.

LASIK Laser eye surgical treatment is an outstanding alternative for my brother and for those who have eye troubles. It made achievable the things we thought were without a solution. My brother, until now, doesn’t have to wear glasses. It did not only cure his astigmatism but also enhanced his vision all-in-all. With a bit of luck, at the end of this year, he will have the surgery for his right eye and we are looking forward to another admirable result. We highly advocate Lasik Eye Surgery.
